A New Beginning
In two suitcases, I packed a million dreams and came to York University as an international student in 2023 to study business administration at the School of Continuing Studies (SCS). The journey has been full of learning, personal growth, and new experiences. I will share my experience as an international student and some advice for future aspirants.
The first impression
The first time I visited York University was on orientation day, and I was in awe as I moved around the campus. The SCS building is an architectural marvel in itself, it has a unique twisted design. The faculty's support humbled me as they patiently handled our queries and guided the international students with all the relevant information we needed to get started for the session.
Academic Experience
Initially, I was a bit skeptical and had some questions about, how the professors would teach. Would I be able to match the pace of studying? But the professors at York University are amazing! They are highly qualified and they are successful in their domains. They teach at York with vast knowledge and real-life experience that they have gathered over the years. They made the entire program engaging and smooth, so I never felt the slightest difficulty.
The most intriguing part was the simulation project in our capstone, taught by Chris Rotolo. Chris is an experienced growth hacker; he helps businesses to improve their performance. Our class of 60 was divided into groups of 5, and we had to run an airline company in the simulation, making various decisions that showed real-time effects. I enjoyed it and learned how tough real competition can be.
Also, the highlights of the program were the guest lectures. At York University, we get the opportunity to attend guest lectures by industry leaders and network. For example, in guest lectures, I ask questions from the speaker and make a rapport. Then I send a LinkedIn connection with a short note referring to the interaction in the class.
Vibrant and engaging student life
York University has one of the best student experiences. From chilling in the break room to eating at York Lanes and hanging out at the pond, York University has it all. On our free days after lectures, the break room was our spot. It has fun activities like snooker tables, PS5, and other games on one end and separate pods for assignments on the other. Chaska in York Lanes was our go-to eating place. It has the best Indian food on campus, My favorite is the samosa chat. Moreover, the class schedule at York is very convenient, helping to maintain a work-life balance.
Moreover, the student federation at Saneca @ York keeps hosting various free events. One day there were volunteers from a wildlife rescue organization and they had wild animals like frogs, spiders, and snakes that they had rescued. A few weeks ago I happened to meet this beautiful python named ‘Mayonnaise’.
Rising Above Challenges
Studying in Canada and managing studies, work, and personal life is not easy as an international student. But as a proud York University student, I can say that the university has all the resources to support students in every possible way. For students looking for jobs, York University provides tips on creating an industry-ready resume and prepares students for interviews. Students going through any crisis can book counselling sessions and get the necessary help. The food bank provides free groceries to students every week, with vegan, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian options.
A Note to Future Students
To all future York School of Continuing Studies international students, the most important skill is time management. It took me a lot of time to practice it, but trust me, if you know how to manage your time, more than half of your work is done. For example, I started noting down all the tasks, work schedules, and assignment deadlines in Google Calendar.
Make the best use of the support you get here. York University has all the Resources for your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Also, take advantage of guidance from career advisors on drafting a strong resume and strategies to crack interviews.
Network, network, and network! This is the best time to network and create genuine, deep connections with professors and fellow students. Your peers might have different work backgrounds and sooner or later everyone will land a job. And you never know which connection of yours might help you land your dream job.

Studying at York University was the best decision of my life. The exposure, experience, and knowledge I have gained here have evolved my perception of life. It is an institution of opportunities. I was able to acquire the necessary skills and strategies to figure out my path. I have tried my best to share my experience as a York University international student.
