Ever dreamt of studying abroad? Let me tell you, it's an incredible mix of excitement, culture shock, and figuring things out on the fly. That's exactly what my experience at York School of Continuing Studies in Toronto has been like. My experience at York in Toronto has been no exception. Right from the day I landed in Canada, I have been on a rollercoaster of highs, lows, and a lot of surprises. In this blog, I will share my experiences and provide advice for future students who are about to start their journey.
The journey began with the usual tasks that any international student has to do; getting a SIN, Presto card, and most important a Canadian contact number. On my second day in Canada, I went to Service Canada to get my Social Insurance Number (SIN) where I met Harneet in the queue. Harneet was a fellow international student who would soon become a good friend and one of the most important parts of my Canadian journey. Harneet helped me navigate the complexities of finding a part-time job, and within two months, I was employed with Dollarama, as an Associate.
Believe it or not, balancing classes, assignments, and a part-time job can feel extremely daunting. It's definitely a challenge! But honestly, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Every time I get stuck on a tough assignment or have a crazy week at work, I learn and discover something new about myself and how to handle the pressure. It's pushed me to grow way more than I ever thought possible, both in school and as a person.
Making friends has been the absolute best part of this journey. I've met these incredible people from different cultures and backgrounds. They're always there to pick me up when I'm feeling down, celebrate the good times, and just be there. They've made this whole experience so much richer, for sure.
Talking about the environment at York School of Continuing Studies academically, it is definitely rigorous yet supportive. The instructors are approachable and always willing to help. The curriculum is designed to provide practical knowledge and skills that are relevant in the real world.
Digital marketing was one course that definitely affected me deeply. We got to work on practical projects that simulated real-world situations in addition to studying theory. This great approach was crucial in helping me understand the nuances of digital marketing. I also gained useful abilities from it that are highly valued in the current employment market.
The support services at York School of Continuing Studies are also commendable. Workshops on interview techniques, job search tactics, and resume writing are available at the career centre. For international students who might not be familiar with the Canadian job market, these tools are quite helpful.
Although adapting to a new culture might be difficult, it can also be a positive experience that teaches you a lot about life. Multiculturalism is well-known in Canada, and Toronto is a great example for its diversity. Every day offers something fresh to do, such as attending cultural festivals or sampling various foods.
One of the cultural adjustments I had to make was learning the native communication style. It is well-known and excellent that Canadians are indirect and polite, which is not typical in my home country. Once I learned to adjust my communication style over time, I found that connecting with locals was easier.
Living alone in Canada taught me invaluable life lessons as well. I became more independent and responsible in a lot of areas of my life, including money and food preparation. These are the kinds of abilities that I can apply to both my personal and professional life.
I was an international student, and I had my share of difficulties. Homesickness was one of the biggest problems I was having. It can be difficult to be apart from friends and family, particularly on holidays and other special events. Nonetheless, technology has made maintaining relationships with loved ones simpler. Frequent video chats with loved ones made me feel more at home.
The burden of academics was another difficulty. It took me some time to get adjusted to the Canadian educational system because it is different from what I was used to. The York School of Continuing Studies instructors were encouraging and helpful anytime I needed it. They supported candid communication and were always willing to listen to worries.
Attending York School of Continuing Studies as an international student has changed my life. It's a journey full of development, learning, and treasured memories. Future learners should approach this experience with positivity and an open mind. The difficulties you encounter will only make you more resilient and strong.
