Embracing the Journey: My Experience as an International Student at York University
Introduction
Studying abroad is one of the most important decisions in a learner's life that involves, possibility, and a lot of doubts. I know you might have a lot of questions, so stick with me and follow along as I share my journey through this blog. When I started this journey, York University in Canada was to be my new found home. The experiences I have had so far where positive, transformative, challenging and enriched me to the fullest. This is my story of studying as an international student at York University, and the joys, challenges, and lucky finds that come with the experience.

The Initial Excitement and Cultural Shock
After touching down in Toronto, the atmosphere was positively electric. The city lights, the strangers, and the cool air challenged me and felt like something new and exciting. But the first day's enthusiasm was soon replaced by the first day of culture shock. Canadian culture was different from what I had been used to and the way of life of the people was also different. Experiencing the daily routines, I understood the role of small conversations, politeness in any conversation, and the Canadian obsession with being punctual. Yes, it was relatively easy to adapt since people in Canada are friendly and hospitable.
Academic Life at York University
York University is a mix of cultures, the society here is diverse and vibrant. This was so different from what I was used to, the academic system which focused heavily on critical thinking and research. Their lecturers were friendly, and they encouraged discussions and debates, which enhanced my learning. It was a challenge at first to manage course works, assignments, and Part-time job. However some additional services like the academic advisors were very useful. The concern of the university for the success of students was seen through the materials they availed.

Building a New Community
Another interesting experience at York University has been able to make a good number of friends from the different corners of the world. This was facilitated by participation in student clubs and organizations as a member. Be it cultural clubs or academic societies, there was something for everyone. Joining such clubs was not only an opportunity to make friends, but also to be proud of one’s culture as well as to discover something new about other people. These group affiliations made the university feel more like home as I was accepted into them.
Navigating Challenges
Living as an international student is also not without some complications. Loneliness was a mainstay in the first few monthsᅳthe longing to be with one's family. It was bad not to be able to see your family and friends and be in a familiar environment. But technology came in handy, and I was able to engage fellow family members back at home.
The last task was that organizing a Canadian's weather was a tough task. As winter kicked in, I felt like a shocker seeing my first snowfall, but the randomly occurring blizzard needed an adjustment. Proper clothing and equipment that would protect from the cold became the rule, and mastering the techniques of walking on the snowy campus became obligatory.

Personal Growth and Independence
When I am given the chance to live on MY own, this coming school year, I have learnt many important facets of independence. All round everything from handling finances to preparing my own food has been an amazing schooling for me. These contributions have not only availing me to a certain level of independence, but they have also helped enhance my confidence levels. Being in a new country, lacking the comfort of familiar territories, has also made me venture out. Despite a few drawbacks such as twisted politics and cumbersome transportation, Toronto is a culturally diverse city with many festivals and lovely views, which makes living and studying here a pleasure.
Conclusion
Joining York University as an international student has been an emotional as well as an experience-filled ride for me. The problems faced at the beginning have now become lovely memories, and the satisfaction I get today is more than satisfactory. The recognition from the academic field, the friendly faces people students meet, and the overall development I have had make this journey all the more worthy.
Taking up higher education in another country? Go for it; it is fun! It is going to be difficult, but it will be worth it beyond measure. York University is not only a place where a person is taught but also a way to turn a person into a new person ready to face the world.
