Greetings dear friends, and international students from various countries! Get ready folks, there is a lot I am about to reveal about my experience at York University SCS. This post is a one-stop resource for all things SCS and being an international student starting from landing to launch – that is graduation and the glorious job that comes afterward.

Facebook Groups: Log into social networking sites and search for groups such as ‘York University International Students’ or ‘[year] Intake York University’ This is where you are likely to get leads from fellow students who are also in search of accommodation.
Kijiji: This Canadian website to shop online for apartments is probably the richest source of apartment listings.
On-campus Residence: In this case, SCS does not possess an independent dwelling, though York University does. Go early though, as spots fill up fast.
Be Agent Aware: Tenants should be cautious with the rental agents when looking for houses to rent. Check up about them and their policies as far as charging unreasonable service fees.
Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to leverage your unique skills and experiences as an international student.
3. Academic Excellence: Mastering the SCS Classroom
Another challenge was acclimatizing to a new learning system and carrying out research. It was quite new to me when it came to teaching methods, grading methods, and even the general conduct of classes at York School of Continuing Studies. However, I received quite a lot of help from professors as well as classmates, which made the transition quite easy.
As for the future students, they should utilize the orientation programmes as well as academic activities provided by the school. These resources are very helpful when it comes to identifying the academic requirements as well as when developing a learning strategy. Also, the formation of study groups with other students can help in studying as there is encouragement from group members.
3. The Job Hunt Hustle: From Classroom to Career
Okay, class is awesome, but let's be real, that Canadian experience (and that sweet, sweet income) involves landing a job. Here's what worked for me:
SCS Career Services: They are your weapons! They provide resume modules, interview training, and even assistance to find a company to work for. One can visit York University’s careers website to find job and networking opportunities.
Handshake: This online website provides students with jobs ranging from part-time, internships and full-time jobs.
Network, Network, Network: Go to the career fairs, find professors who have connections and you need not look down on LinkedIn.
Pro Tip: Never feel discouraged that you are an international student to seek ways that will enable you to bring out the special skills that you have acquired.
4. Beyond the Practical: Embrace the Journey!
While the above helps you settle in, remember, that the SCS experience is more than just finding a place to crash and a job. Here are some golden nuggets:
Get Involved: SCS has great clubs and amazing events. Partake in the great culture of the International Students Association and as well get to know Toronto’s diverse culture and build lasting friendships.
Embrace the Challenge: Getting out of that comfort zone that we like is very easy to do and yet it is very scary. It is all right to raise your hand and ask questions, answer questions give an undertaking and seek assistance when necessary.
Celebrate the Wins (Big and Small): Finally, that presentation that one had been working on? Landing your dream internship? These moments should be celebrated and that’s why we should give a high five.
Remember, you've got this! One should say that being an international student in SCS is an exciting experience. That being said, if one is willing to put a little effort and apply a little resourcefulness in addition to the good old Canadian perseverance, doors will open, hallways will be crossed, academics conquered and dreams of the career will be met. Okay, go out there and exhibit yourself to SCS!
Keep in mind: This, I believe, is just the beginning. Of course, you can elaborate more and even add your specific program, the challenges you’ve faced, and the victories you’ve had. Now, go, be victorious in SCS, come back and tell us the story!
