Introduction

Hello! My name is Chinmayee Nayak, and ever since I planned to move to Canada, I was determined to pursue at least one course at York University. Although I didn’t consider it for my first-year course, I knew exactly where I would land in my second year.

Preparing for York University

In March/April 2023, I started reaching out to Michael Kosiba, Elspeth Staniland, Tanvir (advisors of continuing studies), and the program coordinator Presha Kanesaratnam (now Mr. Todd Rich) for the Digital and Content Marketing course. My excitement for the orientation was palpable, as I hoped to meet new people before the course commenced. Unfortunately, my part-time job prevented me from attending.

First Day Impressions

My friend from George Brown accompanied me on the first day of college. Our first lecturer, Mr. Rob Mitchell, began the class with introductions. My friend Shrey, having no other choice, introduced himself as if he were also a student at York.

As classmates introduced themselves, a friendly debate arose about whether Mumbai or Delhi was better—completely unnecessary, but it broke the ice. During the break, everyone seemed eager to connect, forming WhatsApp groups and discussing their hometowns.

Course Structure and Commute

The course felt well-paced compared to my previous one, which had 4-5 days of lectures from 8 am to 3 pm. At York University, lectures were only 3 hours long, 4 days a week. Although I live in Whitby, the commute to York University is worth it.

Initially, I feared I wouldn’t make new friends. I came with the mindset that this was just another course, and I was done with studies for life! I was wrong. I made wonderful acquaintances and started connecting with people I never thought I’d even speak with. It felt like my life back home in Mumbai—social yet grounded.

Learning from Industry Experts

The course curriculum allowed me to learn from the most knowledgeable and renowned professionals in the industry.

  • Mr. Rob Mitchell: Taught us Business in the Digital Age. I got an exemption from Marketing Fundamentals because it was similar to a course I had studied previously.
  • Roveena Aga: The diva who taught us Planning and Analysis for Content Marketing. Her in-class activities were the most fun.
  • Melyssa Lipsey: The most chilled professor, whose knowledge of digital marketing fundamentals is commendable.
  • Kanak Aggarwal: Taught us Marketing for Search Engines and Social Media. Like us, he came to Canada as an international student and became a dedicated professional in Marketing.
  • Tim Campbell Smith: Known for his creative ideas and wittiness, taught us Content Creation and currently Content Promotion and Amplification. His advice, “Enjoy your day, don’t do drugs,” is memorable.
  • Andrew Temes: Teaches User Engagement and Marketing Automation. Despite seeming strict, he’s a cool professor who brings in guest speakers for practical insights.

Building Connections and Gaining Knowledge

All professors were calm and encouraged us to ask questions. I learned a lot from them and my classmates, who had diverse experiences. It all comes down to the knowledge you gain and the friendships you make. My classmates came from various professional backgrounds, bringing unique perspectives and experiences to our discussions, which enriched my learning experience even further.

We had numerous group projects, where collaboration was key. These projects not only helped us apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios but also fostered teamwork and communication skills. Working with classmates from different cultures and industries broadened my horizons and taught me the importance of diverse viewpoints in marketing.

Advice for Future Students

As I prepare to step into the professional world of Digital and Content Marketing post-September 2024, here’s my advice for future students:

  1. Network Actively: Introduce yourself and network with classmates and professors. Building connections is crucial.
  2. Engage in Class Activities: Participate actively in all activities; they are fun and educational.
  3. Stay Curious: Always ask questions. Curiosity enhances learning.
  4. Time Management: Balance studies, part-time jobs, and social life effectively.
  5. Seek Help When Needed: Don’t hesitate to reach out to professors or advisors for guidance.
  6. Embrace Diversity: Interact with people from different backgrounds to enrich your experience.

Additionally, take advantage of the resources and support services offered by York University. The career center, for instance, provides valuable assistance in resume building, interview preparation, and job search strategies. Make sure to attend workshops and networking events hosted by the university to expand your professional network and stay updated with industry trends.
