According to an analysis by ApplyBoard, the Canadian government issued more than 280,000 new study permits from January to June 2023 —- a 77% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This surge in international student enrollment highlights the appeal of studying in Canada.

Starting your educational journey in a foreign country can be both exciting and daunting, especially if you are an introverted and shy person. As an international student at York School of Continuing Studies, I have faced many ups and downs in my journey that made me the person I am today. In this blog post, I will share my international student experience and offer advice on how to overcome apprehensions regarding this journey.

My Journey as an International Student

The decision to study abroad was driven by my desire for personal growth, academic excellence, and the opportunity to experience a new culture. The path was not always smooth, but each challenge came with invaluable lessons and experiences.

Here’s a breakdown of my journey, from settling into a new environment to overcoming academic hurdles and finding my place in a vibrant, multicultural community.

Phase 1: Overcoming Initial Hurdles

My initial days at York School of Continuing Studies were a blend of excitement and anxiety. Adapting to a new culture, climate, and educational system was challenging but also rewarding. Here are some of the initial challenges I went through.

  • Cultural Shock: The way people communicate, social norms, and daily routines are different from what I was used to.
  • Climate: Adjusting to the Canadian weather, especially winter, was tough.
  • Educational System: The teaching methods, grading system, and classroom environment were different from those in my home country.

The International Student Office at the York School of Continuing Studies played an important role in helping me adjust to my new environment. They provided a range of services and resources designed to support international students through every step of their journey.

Phase 2: Academic Challenges

The academic experience at York School of Continuing Studies is both demanding and different from what I was used to. Group projects, presentations, and a lot of self-study required a different approach. However, the faculty and academic advisors were always available to provide guidance and support.

Here’s a look at the challenges I faced and how I adjusted to them:

  • Self-Study: Unlike my previous education, I needed to spend much time studying independently. This meant becoming better at managing my time and finding ways to learn independently without as much direct guidance.
  • Presentations: Giving presentations was a new experience for me. I had to practice speaking confidently in front of others and adjust to various styles of presenting information.
  • Group Projects: Working on projects with classmates from different backgrounds taught me the importance of clear communication and teamwork. I had to adapt to different ways of working and learn how to collaborate effectively with others.

Phase 3: Social Integration

Building a social network was another significant challenge for me. It took time to find like-minded friends and build a support system. Participating in campus events and joining student clubs helped me connect with others and feel more at home.

Here’s what I did as an international student in Canada to build a social network.
