My Experience at York University.

Okay! Quick question. How do you know that you have been in college for too long? Simple, your parents are running out of money!! That being said, my name is Suvin Vinay Brahme, and I am currently studying Digital and Content Marketing in York University, School of Continuing Studies, Toronto. I started my course in January 2024, and so far, it has been a good journey. Now as my course ends in September 2024, I would love to share my experiences and give some advice to the new students who are enrolling at the University.

On my orientation day I very well remember, I was on a campus tour and there were these bunch of students from mixed sections who were on the tour. I happen to randomly talk to the guy walking next to me. He asked me, “Hey where are you from?” To which I answer him, “Basically I am from Mumbai, but my hometown is Kerala.” As soon as I said this there was a girl who instantly looked back at me, and then she called her boyfriend and whispered to him, “Hey, I think this guy is from Kerala, I think we should go and talk to him.” Now this so-called guy was none other than Ashish who surprisingly is my classmate. This is how I made my first friend in my university. Meeting Ashish was the beginning of many awesome friendships that I have made during my time in the university. One of the best parts of being in this program has been engaging with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Everyone has their own story and getting to know my classmates has been a good experience for me. From this I realised one thing and I would like to advise y’all, take the time out to know your classmates and make new friends and connections, because “PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE.” Making connections in the university will only make your university experience better.

Throughout my course I have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best professors. They have been supportive throughout the course, which made learning easy for me. Remember this. Never hesitate to reach out to your professors if you need help or if you have a doubt. Remember, no professor is good or bad. They are there to guide you and help you succeed. So, make most of their knowledge. One of the most important things that I have learned is actively participating in class. Participating in discussions, asking questions, sharing your opinions and ideas is going to help you in the long run. It will also show your professors your interest in the subject. Never be afraid to speak up in your class, because everyone is here to learn. Ask more questions, because no question is right or wrong, UNLESS YOU REALLY ASK A STUPID ONE.

Time Management is one of the other things that I learned being in the university. It is really important to balance your studies and your personal life. Sometimes with all the assignments, exams, it can be a bit overwhelming. But once you know how to manage your time and prioritize your work, it is a cake walk. But also, don’t get so engrossed in your studies, that you forget the “Real World.” Go out, spend time with your friends, take a break, relax, get a hobby, because as Thanos rightly said, “Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.” So, find a balance, because it will help you stay productive.

There will be times when things are going to get rough, and you might feel stressed. It is important that you stay positive and don’t lose hope. You must remember that you started this journey for a better future. You must surround yourself with friends that support you and push you to your limits. Taking care of your mental and physical health is important so make sure you take out time for yourselves and do things that you enjoy. As I conclude I would say a few things to the new students. Have an open mind and be open to new learnings, and perspectives. Participate in the class activities, discussions and keep your opinions. This will help you make new connections and build friendships. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. There are professors and others who are going to be there to help you when you need it. Make sure that you submit all your assignments before time so that you have extra time for yourself to study and do other productive things. Enjoy life as it comes, make memories and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. And last but not least, in the words of my professor, “PLEASE DON’T DO DRUGS.”

As I prepare to finish my course in September 2024, I am thankful for all the experiences. To all the new students enrolling at York University, I wish you the best of luck.
