Introduction

My Journey to Canada

In this blog post, I am excited to share my transformative journey as a student at York University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) in the Digital & Content Marketing program. In December 2022, I moved to Canada, beginning a new chapter in my life. The first New Year without my family was challenging. The first one to two weeks were good as I was settling down with the weather and culture, but soon the real struggle began: searching for a job. It was difficult; I used to drop my resume at various places near my house and in downtown convenience stores, restaurants, gas stations, and everywhere I could think of. Despite my efforts, I didn’t get any replies. That was the time I realized I needed to build networks so that people could refer me. During this period, I was pursuing an International Business Management (IBM) degree from Niagara College Toronto. IBM gave a comprehensive overview of management topics, but I was especially interested in digital marketing.

While studying at Niagara College, I used my GIC to cover rent, groceries, and other utilities. After that, I felt like there was no scope for me in Canada, and Watching my housemates go to work while I sat at home made me feel disheartened and made me think about going home(India). Despite my intense desire to quit, I decided to give myself another shot. I realized why I came to Canada in the first place: to pursue my ambitions and create a brighter future. The realization provided me the strength to keep pushing through the difficult times and continue to pursue my goals.

After 3.5 months, one of my housemates informed me about a summer hiring opportunity. He suggested I send in my resume and promised to refer me. Finally, I got a job at Osmow's Shawarma, which gave me a bit of confidence. Now that I had a job, I started saving money and began thinking about pursuing a second course. Then I got to know about the Digital and Content Marketing course provided by York University's School of Continuing Studies (SCS). I became fascinated and impressed by the course subjects when I delved deeper into the program information. I created a video statement of purpose to submit with my application. I was thrilled to receive an offer letter in less than a week! As a student at York University School of Continuing Studies, I have had a great experience that has improved my Professional growth.

First Impressions of York School of Continuing Studies

For the first time, I visited York University during my orientation, Todd Rich took us on a campus tour, showing us the library and culinary options at the institution. When I first stepped into the classrooms at York University's School of Continuing Studies (SCS), I was astounded by the design. The glass walls allowed natural light into the rooms, creating a bright and refreshing setting that immediately enhanced my mood and eagerness to learn. The view of the surrounding campus contributed to the positive vibe, making it a place where I wanted to spend my time and concentrate on my studies.

Engaging Learning Experiences:

One of the things that impressed me was how engaging the classes were. The faculty at York SCS was unique in their approach. They did not only teach; they also engaged us in interactive activities such as hockey card games, Lego building, and poster-making projects. These activities were more than just enjoyable; they pushed us to communicate with our classmates and share our different viewpoints, generating a strong sense of community and connection.

Methods of Learning and Practical Application:

The teaching methods used at York SCS were extremely effective. Instead of depending entirely on PDFs, the teachers included practical tasks that helped us understand the teachings better. For example, they showed us videos and advertisements linked to our classes that we could directly apply to our future employment. These real-life examples made the lessons more engaging and motivated me to attend each session.

Guest Speakers and Networking Opportunities:

At York SCS, guest speakers provided valuable insights into real-world careers. Connecting with these professionals on LinkedIn allowed for portfolio building. Networking opportunities at York SCS encouraged professional growth, allowing students to learn about different industries and gain insights. Building these networks also opened doors to job opportunities.

Access to Learning Platform:

Another important advantage was the ability to access learning platforms. York SCS offered us tools such as LinkedIn Learning, HubSpot, and Hootsuite. These platforms assisted me in developing additional skills related to my area, expanding my knowledge and preparing me for the job market. The library's access to academic publications, e-books, and research databases proved helpful during my studies.

The diversity of courses at York SCS was amazing. The programs comprised courses on Customer Relationship Management, Buyer Personas, Data Analytics, and Content Creation. These classes gave me a complete understanding of the sector and prepared me with the necessary skills to succeed.

Industry projects:

One of the most significant aspects of my study at York SCS was the industry assignments. Some programs asked us to do assignments based on small businesses, which provided us with insights into how organizations operate. These projects, combined with case studies and scenarios offered by academics, helped me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. This not only helped me make better decisions but also sharpened my problem-solving talents.

Possible areas of improvement:

There are some areas that can be improved or enhanced. Firstly, Workshops for crafting resumes and Cover Letters for students to improve the chances of securing job interviews. Additionally, addressing the charging point and Wi-Fi issues on campus would greatly benefit daily convenience. Career coaching sessions to prepare for job interviews and enhance interview skills would also be invaluable. Providing more assistance with co-op placements and updating job boards regularly would help students gain practical experience. Hosting engaging events such as games and activities outside of class, along with celebrating various festivals and special days, would foster a sense of community and connection among students from different courses. Finally, improving café and food court facilities on campus would be a welcome change, eliminating the need to go to Seneca for meals.

Advice for Future students:

  • Applying knowledge in practical life: Students should take advantage of attending classes so that they can take advantage of class activities, assignments, and case studies.
