Written by ANJALIN PRINCY AROKIASAMY | Jul 20, 2024 5:33:32 PM

At York School of Continuing Studies, I've had my lonely moments, but I've also created strategies to overcome them. In this blog post, I'll share my experiences on how to manage loneliness and make the most of your time abroad. Join me as we explore how to build connections, find support, and thrive in a new country.

My Experience with Loneliness as an international student...

Arriving at York School of Continuing Studies as an international student was a challenging experience. Due to personal commitments, I spent the first month of my course in India, arriving in Canada a month after the semester began. This delayed start compounded the usual difficulties of adapting. By the time I joined my classes, my classmates had already formed groups, making it challenging to find and join in a group. Additionally, the course I chose was not directly related to my undergraduate studies, adding another layer of difficulty. The initial weeks were particularly tough as I struggled with cultural differences, an intense academic workload, and the loneliness of being far from home.

One unexpected factor that played a significant role in managing my loneliness was sleep. Adequate sleep helped me maintain a positive outlook and better cope with the emotional challenges of being away from home. Another challenge was cooking food after part-time work and classes. This daily task often felt overwhelming, but I discovered that cooking could also be a therapeutic activity. It not only helped me to eat healthier and save money but also became a way to combat loneliness. Over time, I even started enjoying cooking and experimenting with new recipes.

Strategies to Overcome Loneliness

1. I Prioritized Sleep and Limited my Screen time for Mental Health

One crucial yet often overlooked factor in managing these emotions is sleep. Adequate sleep helps you to cope with isolation, but also boosts energy levels and mood, encouraging social interactions and reducing feelings of inadequacy.

Ensuring you get enough sleep is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. Here are some tips to improve your sleep,

1. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine
2. Maintain a Sleep Schedule, Practice with setting reminders.
3. Limit Caffeine and Screen Time

2. Get Involved in Campus Activities

Participating in campus activities is a great way to meet new people and build a support network. York School of Continuing Studies offers a variety of clubs, organizations, and events that cater to diverse interests. Joining these groups can help you connect with others who share similar passions and create a sense of belonging.

3.Explore and Travel

I took the time to explore my surroundings. Visiting local attractions, trying new foods, and immersing myself in the local culture helped me to distract from loneliness but also gives you a memorable experience.

4.Build Bonds with Roommates

Creating a strong bond with your roommates can significantly enhance your experience. Going for grocery shopping together and sharing daily activities can help you get to know each other better and build a support system.

5.Finding a Reliable Classmate

Find at least one person you can rely on to catch you up mainly if you miss a class. Having someone who aligns with your thoughts and can support you in your academic journey can be invaluable. I found Celine from Uganda, who has become a great friend and helps me stay on track in various ways. Building these supportive connections can make a big difference in your success and well-being.

6.Participate in Events and Meet New People:

Engage in events, workshops, and social gatherings to meet new people and expand your network. By participating in various activities, you open yourself up to new experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Each new connection can offer different perspectives and support, contributing to your overall development and success.

Additionally, creating friendships in your workplace, where you spend around 20 hours per week, can provide a sense of community and belonging. Networking with people who share similar interests can offer valuable support during tough times.

Overcoming loneliness as an international student takes time, effort, and strength. My time at York School of Continuing Studies taught me the importance of good sleep, making friends, and taking care of myself to handle feelings of being alone. By focusing on your health, joining campus activities, and seeking help when needed, you can overcome loneliness and have a rewarding study abroad experience.

To future international students, feeling lonely is a normal part of adjusting to a new place. Embrace the journey, ask for help, and make the most of the opportunities around you. Your time at York School of Continuing Studies can be a wonderful period of growth, learning, and making lasting friendships.
