York University International Students: A Beginners Guide
Introduction
Studying abroad can be a daunting and exciting experience for anyone moving to a new country. York University in Toronto, Canada, has been no exception. In this blog, I’ll share my experience as an international student at the York University School of Continuing Studies and offer practical advice for future international students looking to make the most of their time. We will dive into culture, amenities, and additional aspects of attending the university.
Believing in New Beginnings
First Impressions
Landing in Canada was both exciting and scary, not to mention extremely cold since I arrived in January of 2024. It was my first step on the ladder of attaining a successful career. The diversity and welcoming atmosphere at York University stood out immediately, making me feel a sense of belonging and motivation. However, adjusting to the new culture took some time.
Tip: Be open to meeting people of all backgrounds. It’s a fantastic way to learn quickly and grow.
Dealing With Obstacles
The most immediate challenges would include dealing with homesickness and understanding the Canadian education system. The York University orientation program is a short information packed event that provides valuable insights about the campus and the different facilities, snacks of all kinds (veg and non-veg), a tour of the campus, a chance to meet the staff and learn about the different social and assistance programs that are offered. Life as an International Student
A New Academic System
The Canadian academic system is different from what I was used to back home. My classes were more interactive, and participation was highly encouraged and often necessary. Professors were unique and varied in their teaching styles while being approachable and willing to assist with any difficulties. I found it easy to build relationships with my professors to stay engaged and motivated in my classes.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class and during your professors' office hours.
Meals and Deals
One of my favorite things about the campus is the variety of places to eat and shop! There are the York Lanes, which includes cafes, a variety of restaurants, and other shops to suit any occasion. Near my class building, there were additional restaurants and cafes to explore. You will not get bored easily with all the food options that seem to never end!
Tip: Look for daily deals and happy hours to save money and get the best experience.
Socialization

Advice for Future International Students
Be Prepared
Research: Learn about Canadian customs, weather, and the university campus. Popular apps like AccuWeather will give you real-time updates and forecasts. Listen to the radio and read the local paper to learn about nearby things to do.
Pack Smart: Bring essentials like documents and a winter jacket, but remember you can buy most things in Canada.
Managing Finances
As a student, the amount of cash flow available is limited. I recommend creating a budget and sticking to it. Apps like Splitwise, Uber, Lyft and Poparide are popular for managing expenses and transportation. Being a student, you are entitled to multiple discounts at various stores. Some great student discounts include TTC monthly pass, restaurants, and groceries.
Tip: Open a Canadian bank account and use a budgeting app to track your expenses.
Health and Wellness
Maintaining your physical and mental health is crucial to your success as an international student. There are so many ways to stay fit, which include biking, walking, swimming, joining a sports team, and visiting the gym/recreation center. The University offers health services, including counseling and medical care as needed. York Memberships
