From Humber to York University: Diving deep into the marketing world

Launching into the Digital Content Marketing course, at York School of Continuing Studies, I suppose that emotion can be described as a whirlwind of excitement mixed with a certain amount of nervous tension. Before York, I studied Marketing Management at Humber College and that helped me to get a general perspective on marketing. But I wanted to try to explore more digital avenue and York was the place to do that.

A Cultural Situation That Is Rather In-Between

York University, which is known for its active and cheerful atmosphere, raises unique and rather ironic concerns about the matter of diversity at the institution. Despite what one might believe given the fact that the university heavily pushes the concept of multiculturalism the reality is often far from that. Imagine now as a large party where everyone is here, but the representation is not as inclusive as the advertisements claim. However, the environment still continues to be interesting to encourage the creation of a space in which the diverse ideas work as a source of useful debates that will help the group enhance their knowledge.

Although it may not be as diverse as people hoped, it does mean that even if the member has different background from the others, he or she can still contribute a different perspective into the classroom discussions. They help students to reason with a number of concepts which makes the learning environment interesting and vibrant. Interacting with others within this environment can be compared to a world of concepts in which every given discourse is an introduction of a new shade into the artwork. In this case therefore, one can scarcely talk about York’s Digital Content Marketing program without mentioning its truly exceptional faculty. Of them all, there is one person who stands out; Professor Tim is one person who one is not likely to forget easily. The one who spices up his teachings with sass and a rather catchy catchphrase. His lectures are amusing and witty but at the same time he offers a real insight into the subject matter. However, he does not slack on punctuality, and class attendance—and there is no question on that, if you are late, watch it! If you are a minute past time he will not hesitate to remind you of the fact that he does not tolerates lateness. This strictness is, however, temperate by his genuine passion for studies, his eagerness in teaching and by the fact that he manages to make his students understand the more complex concepts with ease and fun.

However, one of the stand out professors worth mentioning is Professor Rovena whom I have had an opportunity to learn from. Her teaching style is well explained with very good intentions and full of understanding. I am still in awe at how Professor Rovena teaches, she always has a way of simplifying highly complicated theories that even the most complicated topic will not seem intimidating at all. She was clearly dedicated to her students, as well as knowledgeable about the subject matter, thus making the atmosphere conducive to learning. With her help the students not only learned the theoretical side of the digital content marketing and how it works, but also learned the practical side.

Building Strong Relationships

Another essential aspect I got at York was good friends. Performing group projects and assignments help one to be familiar and interact with one another beyond the basic level. We discussed things and developed extended relationships. Besides classroom, there were many formal and informal, official and unofficial meetings and parties. These events offered a good chance to get acquainted with representatives of the sphere and other students. It is always encouraging to be surrounded by such contacts as it is always a source of encouragement and new opportunities in my professional life.

Learning Through Practical Experience

What we didn’t experience was lectures devoid of practical application; if anything, theories required implementation. Right from the time of application, we were handling projects that were closely related to experience in real life environments. It can be said that one of the most interesting assignments was to develop a content marketing plan for the local company. We implemented all kinds of knowledge that we possessed, starting from the definition of the market and ending with the production of interesting content. This was a very tough program but I benefitted a lot from it as I gained real life skills that I can apply in my working environment.

Looking Ahead

The opportunity that York has given me have enhanced my skills thus expanding my options. The digital content marketing area is rapidly expanding, and the course was designed to make the best out of the changes. It is also important to notice that the emphasis on the recent tendencies and instruments serves as a guarantee of our ability to enter the job market. I have also gained friendships that have been constructive at York. I think that ‘’family friendly’’ network of alumni, industry connections, and supportive faculty is the key to success. More so, the people in York are helpful whether you need a job, looking for people to partner with in a project or people to consult.

Advice for Future Students

As you prepare to start your journey in digital content marketing at York, here are some tips to help you make the most of your experience: It’s worthwhile to get in the water and swim around freely and have a good lot of fun while at it. Do not get overwhelmed on the knowledge that out there to be learnt. Go through it channel by channel. Stick to the basics and make sure you have sound fundamentals and further explore what you know as the bases. Be active and engaged. Sincerely contribute to the classroom discourses, group projects, and any related activities.

Just as with any learning experience, the more you immerse yourself and commit yourself in the said process the more you will benefit from it. During taking the Digital Content Marketing course, I acquired necessary knowledge and self-confidence to work in the digitized environment.
