A Journey of Self-Discovery: My Experience as an International Student at York

Being an international student involves feeling a variety of emotions while facing numerous challenges and opportunities that accompany studying in a foreign country. Just like everyone else, I have also felt a combination of excitement and nervousness.
As I reflect on my experience as an international student at York School of Continuing Studies, I am reminded of the countless moments that have shaped me into the person I am today. It's been a journey of self-discovery, filled with challenges, opportunities, and valuable lessons.
When I first arrived in Canada in December 2023, I was filled with excitement and nerves. After finishing my MBA in India, I was eager to enroll in a specialized Digital and Content Marketing course at York. The thought of starting fresh in a new country was challenging, but I was determined to make the most of this opportunity.
As I came and start my new life in Canada, I quickly realized that getting admission and visa was just the beginning. The real struggle began after landing in Canada, far away from the comfort and support of my family. For the first time in my life, I had to do everything on my own - from cleaning my space to buying groceries and cooking meals. Although it was challenging, I was committed to adjusting and overcoming the learning curve.
Here, I will share the challenges I faced as an international student, the lesson I learned, some advice for future student, and a life at my university.

Challenges of Being an International Student in Canada:
Balancing my studies with part-time work and personal responsibilities posed a significant challenge for me. Being an international student, I didn't have the option of depending on assistance from family or financial support. I had to rely on myself and take charge of every aspect of my life.
Adapting to the Canadian lifestyle presented another obstacle. Adjustment was necessary for every aspect of daily life, including trying new foods and navigating public transportation. At times, it felt like a lot to handle, but I was confident that by staying determined and being patient, I would eventually succeed.
One of the biggest changes was getting used to the language barrier. Being a non-native English speaker required me to put in a lot of effort to enhance my language abilities and effectively interact with my classmates and teachers. Due to Canada's multiculturalism, many individuals who are not fluent in English posed a challenge when attempting to communicate through gestures and signs.
Apart from these, there are multiple small challenges which have to be taken care of in routine life.

Lessons I learned during my journey:
Even with difficulties, being an international student in Canada has been incredibly rewarding. I gained important lessons about time management, budgeting, and prioritization through experimenting and making mistakes. I also learned to appreciate the value of hard work and dedication.
One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of networking. As an international student, it can be easy to feel isolated and disconnected from others. However, by attending networking events and joining student clubs, I was able to connect with like-minded individuals and build meaningful relationships.
I also learned to be open-minded and adaptable. Coming from a different culture, I had to be willing to try new things and adapt to new situations. This openness has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
My Personal advice for future students:
To future students considering studying in Canada as an international student, I would offer the following advice:
- Plan ahead: Research every aspect of your program and make a detailed plan for your stay in Canada. This includes budgeting, finding accommodation, and applying for scholarships. I was eligible for scholarship but I didn’t grab it because I missed the deadline so plan everything ahead.
- Network strategically: Attend networking events and join student clubs to connect with others who share your interests.
- Stay organized: Keep track of deadlines, assignments, and tasks using calendars and planners. Missing deadline for assignment or class will put you in trouble.
- Prioritize self-care: Don't forget to take time for yourself amidst the chaos of student life.
- Be prepared for cultural shock: Coming from a different culture can be overwhelming. Be patient with yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I have many personal experiences where I felt cultural shock.
- Be open-minded: Embrace new experiences and try new things – it's a great way to grow personally and professionally.
- Seek help when needed: Don't hesitate to reach out to your university's international student services or counseling services if you're struggling.
- Stay connected with home: Stay in touch with family and friends back home through regular phone calls or video calls.
- Celebrate milestones: Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. This will boost your confidence.

Life as an International Student at York:
Reflecting on my time at the York School of Continuing Studies, I am thankful for the opportunities I had to develop and gain knowledge. The faculty provided amazing support, giving guidance and access to resources whenever necessary.
The program itself was challenging, but it provided me with a solid foundation in digital marketing. The flexible class hours allowed me to balance my studies with part-time work and other responsibilities.
The most flexible thing I would say is to studying only 2 courses at a time. In many colleges, student study 4 to 5 courses at a time which create difficulties in mastering the subject and manage assignments.
One of the highlights of my experience was being part of a diverse group of students from around the world. We shared our experiences and perspectives, creating a unique learning environment that fostered growth and understanding.
Concluding my experience as an international student at York School of Continuing Studies, it has been a process of discovering more about myself and evolving. I have gained important insights about resilience, adaptability, and determination. To upcoming students, I recommend being ready to adjust, maintaining concentration, making your well-being a priority, persisting in pursuing your dreams, and making the most of every opportunity that arises.
As I look towards the future, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Whether it's pursuing a career in digital marketing or exploring other passions, I know that this experience has equipped me with the skills and confidence to take on whatever comes next.
In closing, studying abroad as an international student is a journey that requires courage, resilience, and determination. It is not always easy, but it is an experience that can transform you in ways you never thought possible.
