Graphic Designing or Digital Marketing? Let's Find Out...

Introduction
Hello everyone, this is Alisha Khaneja from Chandigarh, India. I am currently enrolled in the Digital and Content Marketing course at York University School of Continuing Studies (SCS). I never planned on coming to Canada, but there was a point in my life when I wanted to gain some exposure, and studying abroad had been my dream since childhood. And so I submitted my application to study in Canada.
Even though my extensive research on Canada turned up more bad stories than good, my dream drove me on. I obtained an offer from York SCS for Digital and Content Marketing after submitting applications to five universities, including York University. As an experienced graphic designer, I was passionate about designing and still am, but I knew that pursuing this course could also enhance my skills because digital and content marketing also requires designing. Since I managed a couple of social media handles for some brands, I knew that this course could really help me with the skills I have. However, I was bored with just designing and wanted to combine it with some marketing. I’m glad that I applied for this course and received an offer.

Arrival in Toronto
I've always wanted to come to Toronto for the exposure as an international student. At first, I was scared about everything, from college to bus commuting, and the thought of doing things alone was haunting. I had never been abroad before, and arriving in January meant facing winter at its peak. India’s weather is not nearly as cold as here. After landing on December 21, 2023, in Toronto, I still remember the breath I took and how I felt cold instantly. Fortunately, my dearest friend, who was already here, came to pick me up, so I didn't feel alone. She was also enrolled at York University SCS, so I learned a lot about the university from her, and I was excited to start. On my third day, I went for a tour of my SCS building. I still remember being amazed by our building because, as I mentioned, it was my dream to study abroad. I felt happy when I saw York University SCS. I was excited and nervous at the same time. The first few days were a blur of firsts and adjustments. The hurdles of navigating Toronto's streets, figuring out the public transit system, and acclimating to the winter climate were all new. I still clearly recall my first bus travel, being nervous that I might miss my stop or board the wrong bus. Nonetheless, the easy transfer was facilitated by the city's friendly residents and effective transit system. I felt at home in Toronto because of its multicultural atmosphere, which resembled a melting pot of many customs and cultures.

First Day at York University
My first day at York University SCS was amazing because most of my classmates were from India. Everyone connected smoothly without any hesitation, and since we were all international students, there was a strong sense of relatability between us. Since most of the class came from these cities, students from Delhi and Mumbai engaged in debate on the first day. Since I'm from Chandigarh, I wasn't sure if I would blend in with them. But once I got to know my group members and made some new ones, I felt completely at home. My first impression of the professor was positive. The class is 3 hours long, but professors give a 20-minute break after the first half. Which was necessary because I used to get hungry and, during the break, went to Chipotle, which I had never heard of before but was in front of our building. The food chains beneath York University's "quad," a campus living area, astounded me.
Impressive is the campus itself. York University SCS's architecture combines contemporary style with practicality. The newest technology is used in the classrooms to provide an interactive and interesting learning environment. Students can work together on projects in the many study areas and lounges, or they can just unwind there in between sessions.
Learning Experience
I'm about finished this course, and all the professors understand each student. Excellent, knowledgeable, and experienced teachers teach at York University SCS. In every class, each professor gives us in-class activities after the first half, and these activities really help students gain knowledge on their respective subjects. Through discussions with the teacher and classmates, our confidence is built, and we feel heard, with our perspectives respected. Every professor here at York SCS is open to any questions, and they also repost job opportunities on LinkedIn. The experience at York University was good because they give you more practical knowledge than theoretical. After completing each course, our last assignment used to be the final presentation, which was my favorite part. Presentations are very engaging as you interact with your classmates and professors. York prepares you for real-world corporate discussions, making the habit of discussing things very beneficial.
The curriculum is designed to be hands-on and relevant to the current trends in the industry. A taste of what to expect in our professional lives is provided by the real-world projects we frequently work on. Beyond what is covered in textbooks, the instructors' industry experience is brought to the classroom. The opportunities for networking that this course offers are among its most beneficial features. Events are often held by York SCS to provide students with an opportunity to network with industry leaders, alumni, and possible employers. These gatherings provide an excellent forum for knowledge acquisition, idea exchange, and career-advancing networking.
Campus Life and Infrastructure
York SCS offers free groceries to students and has a first-rate, spotless infrastructure. One big plus is that it has its own metro station, which is convenient.
The campus is vibrant, with a wide range of groups and activities that provide chances to socialize, learn about different cultures, and hone talents. Excellent amenities include a fully furnished fitness center and a student center with resources for mental health, academic guidance, and career counseling. There's always something fresh to try thanks to a wide range of dining alternatives that accommodate all dietary requirements.
Personal Growth and Friendships
Through our group presentations, I have gained some wonderful friends who have assisted me in overcoming my phobia of public speaking. Here, I have encountered several sincere individuals, and I am appreciative of that.
Studying at York University SCS and living in Toronto have changed my life. My resilience and independence have increased as a result of the difficulties I overcame, including transitioning to a new culture, managing daily living away from home, and coping with academic pressures. My instructors and friends have provided me with an important support system. They have not only supported me through my struggles but have also shared in my victories.
These are unique friendships that I have formed. Numerous memories have been made together, including late-night study sessions and city explorations. We've had a lot of adventures in Toronto, with its energetic neighborhoods and varied culinary scene. The city's musical performances, cultural events, and educational opportunities offer a greater insight into Canadian culture.
