Inside Look: My experience at York School of Continuing Studies and lead for your success

Author: Jaskirat Kaur
My choice to enroll at York University's School of Continuing Studies was greatly influenced by my agent. He suggested the course, and as I was not familiar with the intellectual or cultural components of Canadian society, I didn't know what to anticipate now. I didn't feel more confident until I did my own study at York University, inspired by my cousins' positive feedback and assurances of excellent instruction. But the true adventure started when I moved to Canada and settled into York. This was the turning point in my academic and personal path, where I went from just hearing about it to really experiencing it.
My experience with School of Continuing Studies at York University
For me, orientation day was undoubtedly an exciting point. From the beginning, the faculty at the School of Continuing Studies put us at ease and made us feel welcome. I felt right at home as soon as I met my fellow students and saw all the wonderful resources available. We were given a quick overview of the campus by our energetic tour guide, who also showed us around the stunning new School of Continuing Studies building. We had a fantastic lunch to round off the day, which was the ideal way for me to begin my experience in York.
I made the decision to start my first year of studies at York School of Continuing Studies in 2023 by enrolling in the Public Relations course. I recall being nervous and excited. Thankfully, the program's structure provided me with the necessary flexibility. It was manageable that the lessons were held 4 days a week for a total of 3 hours. The fact that there were 4 batches available, letting me select the one that best fit my schedule, made it even better. This first year's experience made me select the second course 'Digital and Content Marketing' in the same place.
The lecturers' amazing support was what really flipped the experience around. In addition to their in-depth knowledge of the topic, they exuded genuine warmth and willingness to assist with any queries or worries. I felt much more competent and confident in my ability to meet the course's academic requirements because of their support and encouragement.
A Memorable Group Project: Education through Cooperation with different mindsets
I did many individual and group assignments but a group assignment in one of my classes that stands out in my memory involved receiving chits with different shapes drawn in it while wearing blindfolds. It was a cooperative exercise where one person had to describe the diagram orally, while the other, wearing a blindfold, had to sketch it according to the directions. I had never worked with students from such a wide range of backgrounds before. But as it happened, it was a great opportunity to learn. Our divergent viewpoints and ideas produced insightful conversations and creative solutions.
Break Room Shenanigans
The downstairs break room is one of my favorite places to relax on my SCS campus. There is a coffee station that satisfies my desires and truly is a gem, offering a variety of coffee flavors. The two vending machines here are what really make it great—they're filled with healthy and snack alternatives.
What started off as just a plain coffee place soon developed into a center for spirited discussions, unplanned get-togethers, and even a few truly amazing experiences. These were wonderful moments because of the conversations. Whether it was exchanging jokes about upcoming weekends or catching up on the newest assignments, the break room turned into a place where friendships thrived. These little laughs were a wonderful way to relax and strengthen relationships with peers.
A Memorable Holi Celebration Outside SCS
My best memories are of my friends and I enjoying Holi outside the SCS. So that we could get right into the colorful fun, we all agreed to dress in shabby, outdated clothing. Many of us were new to Holi, hailing from various backgrounds and even abroad.
After spending some time educating our friends about the Holi day, we had some fun dousing each other in bright Holi color. The day was happy and full of laughter. It was a lovely way to accept and share each other's customs and make priceless memories, not just a means to have fun.
Campus Connectivity's Convenience
Excellent connectivity is one of the things I love most about the campus. The School of Continuing Studies is within a 7–8 minute walk from the York University's subway station. The convenience of using public transport so near to the campus has improved my entire York experience.
Convocation Day
The School of Continuing Studies at York University held an unforgettable convocation day. The excitement filled the air as we assembled in our gowns, eager to celebrate the result of our hard work.
It was surreal to cross the stage and accept my degree; it was a symbolic moment for all the late hours, difficulties, and friendships that shaped my path. Observing my instructors applauding us brought back memories of the crucial support they had provided.
The ceremony evoked feelings of pride, happiness, and nostalgia. There, surrounded by other graduates, I felt a strong bond with everyone. Following that, I celebrated with friends and family while recalling my time in York and taking pictures.
Room for Improvement: Adding More Celebrations to York's School of Continuing Studies
Continuing Studies, there are certain things it could have done better. For example, our campus does not have regular festivals and events like Seneca does. Dog shows and other entertaining events are among the Seneca events that draw students from all over the institution. I've always wanted to take part in these events, but on my own campus, I've never had the chance. If I could provide the administration with feedback, I would recommend planning additional festivals and events to improve the School of Continuing Studies' experience for students. I've previously voiced my opinions on the campus feedback page in the hopes that something would happen.
My advice for future students
It's wonderful to begin your journey at the York School of Continuing Studies, and I'd like to give some advice that has been helpful to me:
Remain prepared, it can be stressful to juggle several classes and assignments, so maintaining organization is essential. To remember deadlines, I used a planner and a digital calendar, which really simplified my experience in York. Take part instead of merely taking notes and sitting back! Engage in dialogue, pose questions, and go deeply into the subjects that pique your interest. I promise that your studies will be more enjoyable and fulfilling the more you participate, so just participate actively.
Everyone has difficult times, and that's alright. Never be afraid to ask for assistance if you need it. Working with peers can open your eyes to new ideas, and York's faculty is very helpful.
Examine your options as York SCS offers a lot more than just academics. Take advantage of these possibilities, whether they be workshops, seminars, or extracurricular activities; they are excellent ways to network and pick up new skills.
Finally, remember to look after yourself. It's simple to get sucked into your studies but remember to take breaks and unwind occasionally. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance can help you stay motivated and avoid burnout.
Savor every second of your time at York—it's a path filled with learning and development!
