My Journey at York University School of Continuing Studies

The stunning campus of York University is where dreams come true—or maybe not.

Introduction

When I first arrived at the York University School of Continuing Studies in Jan 2023, I felt a mix of emotions—anxiety and excitement. Coming from a modest background in a small town, the extravaganza and grandeur of the campus were both overwhelming and impressive at first. I eventually got to know that nothing is perfect, but more on that later. However, the welcoming nature of my peers quickly put me at ease. This blog post is a reflection on my journey and some advice for students who might be considering a similar path in the future.

A New Beginning: Post-Graduation Certificate in Public Relations

Engaging with fellow students during a public relations class.

I began my studies with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Public Relations. Transitioning from my previous career as a lawyer in my home country to the creative world of Public Relations was a significant change. However, I soon found that this was where I belonged, and the course truly resonated with me For example, in class, all the professors would try to make the class as interactive as possible. However, the professor who is, to date, my favorite is Melissa Lipsey. I absolutely loved her teaching style. At the end of every class, she would give us a practical situation and ask us to come up with our own solutions. Also, she would ask us to read the course material given to us before class so that we would have questions and the class would be more like a discussion than just her blurting out stuff, just as she would put it. Also, every time someone knew an answer to a question, she would give Kisses, the chocolate! The curriculum was practical and dynamic, unlike the theoretical approach of my law school.

In the first year, I delved into subjects such as the Fundamentals of Public Relations, Content Creation and Storytelling, Stakeholder Relations and Community Engagement, Strategic Planning and Measurement, Internal Communication and Change Management, and so on. The professors, including Melissa Lipsey, Leigh Mitchell, and Lyndon Johnson, were outstanding. Their creative and practical teaching methods made my learning experience more delightful.

I attended my graduation in October 2023. It was an overwhelming experience. I felt strong emotions walking on the stage to receive my degree. It was a blissful experience! I can safely say that I truly enjoyed my course, and the company of my friends was an added bonus.

Transition to Digital and Content Marketing

Practical learning and hands-on approach in Digital and Content Marketing course.

After completing my first course in August 2023, I began my next one in January 2024 with a  Post-Graduation Certificate in Digital Marketing and Content Marketing. This course truly spoke with me, and I realized that this was the career path I wanted to take. However, the quality of teaching I experienced during my time in the public relations course exceeded my expectations. The professors were more helpful and focused on the needs of the students rather than just rushing to finish the course. For instance, many of the professors in the Digital and Content Marketing Course are juggling side projects, which sometimes hinders their ability to fully dedicate the necessary time and effort to the course. Apart from that, professors not helping students expand their networks was another off-putting behavior that my friends and I experienced.

However, not everything and everyone contributed to the bad experiences. Professors such as Leigh MitchellAndrew Temes, and Tim Campbell-Smith genuinely care about the students and try to help us as much as they can in their capacity. For instance, I remember during a guest lecture for Andrew's class, he made sure that we had questions and we connected with absolutely wonderful Suzannah Kelly.

Speaking of great professors, I would give Tim a ten on ten! (The professor who made us write this blog.) I absolutely love his presence in the class; he has knowledge and knows how to deliver it. He makes the class funny and fantastic at the same time; however, during the fun, the quality of teaching is never compromised. He somehow makes even the most boring topics interesting, such as technicalities of content amplification. As a content creator myself, the course taught me how to market and amplify my own content effectively. I learned about running Google ads, the significance of SEO and SEM, the importance of planning and analyzing content marketing, and how to use marketing for search engines and social media. The knowledge I gained has effectively enhanced my understanding of content marketing and how to use the right tools to reach the right audience.

 My Feedback

While my experience has been overwhelmingly a mix of positive and negative, I do have some suggestions for improvement. I believe some professors could do a little more to assist students in connecting and networking with seasoned professionals in the field. This would help students apply what they have learned in real-world scenarios and gain more insights. Additionally, professors should actively support students in seeking referrals, simplifying their lives and providing access to the latest job and internship opportunities. Additionally, a more practical and hands-on approach, rather than a purely theoretical one, could be beneficial in some courses, such as for Content Creation, where we should have had access to tripods, mics and other shooting gadgets so that we could learn content creation more effectively and practically.

Apart from that, I find it extremely strange that the building of York University School of Continuing Studies is secluded from what is supposed be the actual York University. The students of York University School of Continuing Studies are are not even allowed to register themselves at the York Residence, I am telling all this from first-hand experience. Are we half the students compared to the ones who are getting their Bachelor's and Master's degrees at York University?

Advice for Future Students

For those students considering studying at York University, here are some pieces of advice based on my experience:

Do Your Ground Research

Before registering for any course, it's important to conduct thorough research. Understand the course curriculum and content, the job market, country policies and how the course falls in alignment with your career goals. This research and groundwork will help you set realistic expectations and make an informed decision. Also, if you are planning to settle down in Canada, I will not suggest that you take up this course as it falls in the general category and it would be difficult to get points for permanent residency.

Join Professional Associations

During the course, consider joining associations like the the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS). These organizations can provide guidance from industry experts and valuable networking opportunities, giving you a jump start in your career. I regret not joining these associations sooner, as they definitely provide great career opportunities to students. It makes networking with pioneers in the field a bit easier. These associations host networking events and conduct Mentor-Mentee programs to guide students. I would absolutely recommend everyone join early, as they provide discounts for students.

Plan for Challenges

Keep in mind the challenges that might come your way, such as inflation, the cost of living, lack of jobs, and the housing crisis. Budgeting and planning properly for these challenges in advance will help you navigate them more effectively. I learned this lesson through tough experience. With no funds to cover the upcoming month's rent, it weighed heavily on my mind as a result of not anticipating and planning ahead.

Actively Engage

Make the most of your time at York University by proactively engaging in classes and networking events. Build relationships with your professors and peers, as these connections can prove truly invaluable in your prospects. I have a friend called Tanya. She is currently employed in the field of Public Relations and has invited me to accompany her to a networking event next week. She has assured me that she will introduce me to industry professionals, allowing me to immerse myself in the environment, engage in meaningful conversations about their practical experiences, and gain valuable insights.

At the end of the day, my time at York University School of Continuing Studies has been transformative, has helped me gain new perspective good or bad, and has been insightful. From gaining new skills to discovering my true passion to several heartbreaks and disappointments, the experience has been enriching and rewarding, as I have learned a lot. I hope my personal journey and advice will help future students make informed decisions and make the most of York University.
