My Love-Hate Relationship with York University SCS.

My Experience with Digital Marketing at York SCS"
Despite my journalism and mass communication background, I was surprised to find myself opting digital marketing. Nearing the completion of my Digital Marketing Certificate program at York University's School of Continuing Studies, was a remarkable journey. I felt like a stranger in a world moving at lightning speed compared to my background in traditional media. Over the course of several weeks, I uncovered both my voice and a profound enthusiasm for the ever-evolving industry. I'll share my authentic, unfiltered journey with you, hoping it would have benefited me had I read it earlier. This program may encourage those without a marketing background to consider its suitability based on my personal experience.
I was particularly amazed by the curriculum's currency and applicability. My journalism background left me concerned about the complexity of the technical elements. Learning tools like Google Analytics and Facebook Ads Manager became less daunting due to the hands-on approach.
Memorable Experiences at York
One of the most attractive things about York University is being in class at 8:30 in the morning and watching the dawn. With its gorgeous buildings and stunning surroundings, York University has without a doubt the best morning views. Furthermore, I recall receiving a gift basket from York University at Easter. Chocolates and a York University cardholder were included in the hamper, which made me very delighted. Isn't that thrilling? In terms of hygiene, York University surely upholds standards, particularly with regard to the frequently cleaned restrooms.
Concerns About Facilities
There were also a couple things that I found annoying.Firstly, the ports for charging! There were charging ports on the tables in the classroom, but the most aggravating part was that they weren't actually working! Moreover, there was a lack of amenities in the restroom on our floor because there were no tampon and sanitary pad machines.
RELEVANT, PRACTICAL AND EVOLVING:
The digital marketing curriculum at York SCS is impressively current and applicable. In a rapidly changing industry, this is essential. Instead of solely focusing on theory, we immersed ourselves in practical applications using genuine tools and campaigns.
For instance, I recall my initial Facebook Ads Manager login for a class assignment. I remember being so confused because I used Facebook for personal use and not professionally. Our instructor guided us in designing an authentic campaign, incorporating audience targeting and ad creation. At the end of the module, I gained the power to reach thousands of potential customers with just a few clicks.
An in-depth analysis of Google Analytics proved enlightening. Having a journalism background, I was accustomed to measuring audience engagement through readership and comments. Through Google Analytics, I discovered an abundance of data, including bounce rates, conversion funnels, and user flow.
The uniqueness of this program lies in its ability to remain updated. Industry experts frequently presented the latest trends and techniques to us. Our teaching schedule would alternate weekly between the fundamentals of SEO and innovative growth hacking strategies from successful start-ups.
BUILDING A NETWORK (Even for Introverts):
Networking no longer gives me cold sweats. Being an introvert, it made me apprehensive about exposing myself. York SCS's program facilitates the development of connections in an organic, unintimidating manner.
As we progressed through the program, I became familiar with my classmates. Even though coordinating schedules was initially difficult in our group projects, they proved to be some of the most rewarding experiences during the program. That’s how I ended up being friends with Jaskirat and Harman. We are always helping and supporting each other academically as well as personally.
Our first big group project involved developing a marketing strategy for Dempster’s. With a UX designer, a former sales rep, and a recent business graduate, I was teamed up. Initially, I was filled with fear. With my journalism background, I could provide unique insights and perspectives to the team. During the brainstorming session, I discovered the importance of my skills in storytelling and content creation. While I crafted the narrative, my teammates contributed with their unique strengths. By the end of the project, we had created a marketing plan and a team bonded by common support.
The program arranged virtual meetings with industry experts. At my first attendance, I remained largely silent. By the third social media event, I was confidently discussing trends with a major tech company's marketing director. Realizing my growth in both knowledge and confidence, the moment seemed surreal.
The unique sense of community marked this experience. I came to enjoy forming authentic relationships during group projects. I found myself looking forward to our LinkedIn group discussions and even the graduate networking events (something the shy me would never have imagined!
TIME MANAGEMENT
Although the journey wasn't without difficulties,. Managing work, personal life, and academics required ongoing coordination. At 2 AM, I struggled to complete a project or grasp a complex concept, my eyes heavy with fatigue.
The extensive coverage left us feeling overwhelmed at times. One week we'd focus on email marketing automation on Hubspot , the next on social media ads and campaigns. At times, it was as if I were drinking from a firehose.
Despite the challenges, the most significant growth occurred. This experience taught me to prioritize, divide complex tasks, and humbly request assistance when necessary.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
I've discovered new meaning in developing captivating, platform-specific brand content. I adopted a journalist's approach to marketing, combining storytelling with data analysis. My writing skills found a new purpose in crafting engaging, brand-centric content across various platforms.
This program presents a challenge worth embracing, especially for those from non-traditional backgrounds. Overcome shyness and self-doubt to move forward. At York SCS, you'll thrive beyond your anticipated growth.
Utilize every networking chance, regardless of initial discomfort. Strive to utilize your knowledge for practical projects. Embrace curiosity and ask questions, as your distinct viewpoint holds worth.
