Digital Marketing at York: My Story

My Beginnings at York University
My journey at York University started in an unusual way—with a video Statement of Purpose (SOP). Usually, I'm more comfortable behind the scenes, working on content, so the idea of talking about myself on camera made me nervous and excited. But as I recorded myself to study abroad in canada, I found that I actually enjoyed being in front of the camera, which was a big surprise!
Getting the admission letter and the date for orientation day was really exciting. On the day of the orientation, I got up early and made sure I was ready to see the university for the first time, meet new people, and learn about my course. The faculty welcomed us warmly, and it was great to see so many new faces. We got an overview of the course and met the course coordinator. We enjoyed some tasty snacks and ended the day with a tour of the campus, checking out the amazing state-of-the-art buildings and facilities.

Embracing the Digital and Content Marketing Course
When I stepped into my first lecture and started my journey of study abroad in canada, I could see a few familiar faces from orientation day. I was nervous for the class as I was attending university after almost half a decade, and I honestly did not know what to expect. Most of my classmates were younger and from the social media generation. However, the structure of the course eased me in a little bit. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed, focusing on two subjects at a time. This step-by-step approach has been instrumental in helping me grasp complex concepts without feeling overwhelmed.
One of the highlights of the course is the hands-on approach to learning. Rovena, who taught us Planning and Analysis for Content Marketing and Marketing Fundamentals, always conducted interactive sessions that included in-class group activities, which were a lot of fun. I enjoyed the debates in Tim’s lectures, where we had Lego as a topic. Tim’s lectures also gave me the opportunity to be in front of the camera again and come out of my comfort zone with blog writing. The best part was that there was no judgment involved. Kanak’s subject was really technical and difficult. However, the way he broke it down into simple parts made it easier for me to understand. He also prepared us for the real world by giving us case studies simulating actual scenarios, which required a lot of brainstorming to come up with solutions. This prepared us for the journey that awaits us ahead. All the professors were experts in their subject matters and were always ready to help the students in all aspects possible, be it academic, professional, or personal matters.

Building Meaningful Connections
One of the best things about being at York University has been the friendships I've made. The Digital and Content Marketing course attracts a diverse group of people, each with their own perspectives and experiences. Through group projects, class discussions, and social events, I've made connections that I know will last a long time.
I especially enjoyed the time spent with my travel buddy, Rahul, who shares a passion for cars. Another highlight was our lunch sessions at York Lanes, where everyone would bring home-cooked food. It was a wonderful way to share our cultures and culinary skills, and we all looked forward to these meals after class. Sometimes, we would all go grocery shopping together, celebrating festivals and birthdays with homemade treats and decorations.

Cherished Memories at York University
One of my favourite pastimes is spending time in the York Lanes after college hours. The York Lanes is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a hub of activity and a perfect spot to unwind. I often find myself engaged in deep conversations, brainstorming sessions, or simply enjoying the bustling atmosphere.
All presentation days should end with a group selfie.

Another cherished tradition is our monthly bowling nights at Bowlerama. These outings have become a staple for my group of friends. The laughter, friendly competition, and shared memories from these nights out are some of my most treasured moments. It’s a great way to de-stress and bond outside the academic environment.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, my time at York University has been incredibly transformative. From the initial excitement of making my video SOP to the continuous learning and personal growth, every moment has been important. I've gained valuable skills in digital marketing, but more importantly, the experiences and friendships I've had outside the classroom have helped me grow as a person.

York University has been more than just a place to study; it's been a place where I've discovered new passions, made lifelong friends, and become a more well-rounded person. It's a place where dreams start to come true, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next.
