When I arrived at York University School of Continuing Studies in December 2022, my journey from India marked the beginning of a transformative chapter. I stepped off the plane with dreams of new beginnings and endless possibilities, unaware of the profound personal growth and career evolution that awaited me. Transitioning from a successful English Literature professor to a student again at York University was both exhilarating and challenging. My decision to explore new career pathways led me to enroll in the Public Relations course at York University in 2023, where I began my journey of continued education and professional development.
Before arriving in Canada, I had heard about the challenges of building trustworthy relationships in a new country. I was advised not to expect the deep connections I valued back in India, as many people might appear more self-focused. These warnings created a sense of apprehension and uncertainty about forming meaningful professional and personal relationships in my new environment.
However, my experience at York University School of Continuing Studies completely transformed these initial concerns. Shortly after starting my Public Relations course, I found myself surrounded by a group of remarkable individuals. What began as casual conversations between classes quickly evolved into meaningful connections. Together, we explored York University’s vibrant campus, spent countless hours at York Lanes sharing laughter and stories, and ventured beyond the university to discover the beauty of Canada. From thrilling weekends at Wonderland to serene hikes in local conservation areas, our shared adventures were filled with joy and camaraderie, creating lasting memories that I will treasure forever.
I vividly recall the impactful session with Irshad Daftari, a seasoned marketing expert with over 19 years of experience in the field. His deep dive into integrated marketing strategies was truly eye-opening. Irshad’s insights on using data-driven approaches for marketing decisions went beyond typical advice—it was a game-changer. His practical examples and real-world applications significantly influenced my approach to marketing projects, inspiring me to think more strategically and analytically about my work.
Another unforgettable experience was with Pascal Salhuana, whose expertise in change management and communication offered us practical tools for immediate application. In one memorable class project, we simulated a company-wide change initiative. Thanks to Pascal’s insightful teachings, I was able to effectively contribute to our team’s strategy by applying the change management principles he had shared. This hands-on experience with change management was invaluable in enhancing my skills and understanding of organizational transformation.
The professors at York University School of Continuing Studies have a way of transforming the classroom into an engaging and dynamic learning environment. Professors like Tim Campbell Smith and Doris Montanera brought creativity and energy that made each lesson memorable and impactful.
Unwinding with a complimentary beer at Timberlane in York Lanes, courtesy of our Marketing Fundamentals professor Heath, marked a highlight of our first semester. This casual celebration not only provided a much-needed break from academic rigors but also offered a unique opportunity for team-building and networking outside the traditional classroom setting. By fostering a relaxed atmosphere, our professor encouraged us to connect with classmates and instructors on a personal level, cultivating a sense of community that's essential for a rewarding academic journey. This memorable experience showcased the importance of work-life balance and social connections in achieving academic success.
York’s curriculum is meticulously designed to equip students with the skills needed to tackle real-world challenges. The assignments are not just theoretical but based on real-life scenarios, making the learning process both relevant and exciting.
These practical assignments were not just about earning grades; they were about building a portfolio of real-world experiences that would prepare us for our future careers.
While my academic journey at York University School of Continuing Studies has been incredibly rewarding, I do wish we had more co-curricular activities akin to those offered at other campuses, such as Seneca. Events like ice cream socials, student president elections, and pool parties provide a fantastic way to balance academic rigor with socialization and relaxation, ultimately enriching the student experience. Seeing photos of the pool party at Seneca sparked a sense of FOMO, highlighting the value of such activities in fostering a stronger sense of community and camaraderie among students.
By offering a much-needed break from academic stress, these events can help build lasting connections and memories, making student life more enjoyable and holistic.
