Greetings to all international students and fellow blog readers!

unknown.gifFirst off, let me say that you’re all doing an incredible job tackling your student life in Canada. Whether you're just starting or wrapping things up, remember that every effort you put in is worth it. Now, let me take you through my journey as a student at York School of Continuing Studies (SCS) and share some insights that might help future students.

My Arrival in Canada: A New Chapter Begins

When I first set foot in Canada, it was an emotional rollercoaster. As someone who had never initially wanted to study abroad, the decision to come here was driven by my mom’s heartfelt request. She thought it would be nice for me to be with my sister, who had been missing family. Despite my reservations, I found myself on a 24-hour flight, filled with uncertainty about whether I had made the right choice.

The moment I arrived at the airport, seeing my cousin and sister after two years was incredibly touching. However, the cold weather and the feeling of being in a new country added to my initial apprehension.

Starting at York University: First Impressions

Classroom Dynamics and Initial Surprises

On my first day at York University, where I enrolled in the Post-Graduate Certificate in Digital & Content Marketing ,I arrived early, only to find that I was one of the first students to reach the class. Choosing this course was a strategic decision for me, as I wanted to gain specialized knowledge in digital marketing, an area that I believe is crucial for building a successful career in today’s tech-driven world. It was a bit surprising to see that many students weren’t punctual, given the importance of the first day. To my amusement, the classroom seemed like an extension of India, with a majority of Indian students. It felt surreal for a moment—was I really in North America, or was I still dreaming?

The Reality of York School of Continuing Studies

Challenges and Disappointments

Starting at York SCS came with its own set of challenges. One of the major disappointments was discovering that our building seemed isolated from the main campus. It felt like we were given a small, separate space and left to fend for ourselves. This separation made the experience a bit less integrated with the broader university community.

Teaching Quality

When it comes to the quality of education, my experience has been a mixed bag. While I had hoped for a world-class education, the reality was that the teaching standards varied significantly. Some professors were outstanding, while others seemed to merely read off presentations.

Professors Who Made a Difference

1. Professor Leigh

Professor Leigh stood out as a remarkable teacher. Her approach to teaching was engaging and interactive, which made attending her classes enjoyable.I learned a lot about the digital age and gained practical knowledge that I could apply as an entrepreneur. Her passion for teaching made a significant impact on my experience at York.Professor Leigh posing for a picture with students in a lively classroom setting.

2. Professor Heath

Professor Heath was another highlight of my academic journey. "Professor Heath, standing in the center, is surrounded by a group of students in a classroom at York University, celebrating his birthday with a cake on the table in front of them. The group is smiling and making peace signs, creating a cheerful and festive atmosphere. The classroom has large windows, allowing natural light to fill the space."His classes were not just informative but also lively and engaging. His efforts to make lectures interactive and enjoyable, including memorable moments like providing free beer on the last day, contributed to a positive learning environment.

"Professor Tim, a bald and handsome man with tattoos, is seen teaching in a classroom at York University. He is standing and gesturing with his hand, wearing a checkered shirt, while delivering a lecture. The classroom is modern, with chairs and tables arranged for students."Even though I didn’t attend many of Professor Tim’s classes, I appreciated his unique teaching style and personality. His cool demeanor, interesting tattoos, and piercings made him stand out. His classes were well-regarded for their dynamic and engaging nature.

Friendships and Community: A Personal Tale

Building Connections

One of the highlights of my time at York School of Continuing Studies has been forming deep, meaningful friendships. Let me share a story that really stands out. Early in my first semester, I met Raj and Aisha at a student mixer. We bonded over our shared experiences of adjusting to life in a new country and soon became inseparable.

During one particularly tough week, when I was struggling with a challenging assignment and feeling homesick, Raj noticed my stress. Without hesitation, he invited me to a small get-together with friends. That evening, surrounded by laughter and support, I felt a sense of belonging and relief. The way Aisha and Raj rallied around me made all the difference. They became my support system, helping me navigate not just academic challenges but also the emotional ups and downs of living far from home.

Navigating Social Dynamics"Tabrej Siddiqui and his friends from York University are having fun and striking playful poses on large rocks by the water. The sky is clear with a few clouds, and the group is enjoying a relaxed moment by the lakeside."

While the warmth of these friendships was incredibly comforting, the journey wasn’t always smooth. I encountered a few individuals who seemed more interested in gossip than genuine connection. There were moments when I felt judged or misunderstood, which could have easily overshadowed my experience.

But here’s what I learned: focusing on the positive relationships made all the difference. During a particularly cold, lonely winter evening, I remember feeling isolated in a city that seemed vast and impersonal. Then, I received a message from Raj inviting me to a spontaneous movie night. It was these small acts of kindness and the sense of community that made York feel like home.

So, to anyone embarking on a similar journey: cherish the friendships you make and surround yourself with supportive people. It's the connections and the sense of community that will turn a new city from a cold, empty place into a vibrant, welcoming home.

Advice and Tips for Future Students: Lessons from My Journey

1. Embrace the Experience

When I first arrived in Canada, I was overwhelmed by the new environment and the challenges that came with it. I remember feeling isolated during the first few weeks, missing home and struggling to adjust. But a turning point came when I decided to fully embrace the experience. I joined a student group and participated in local events. One memorable night, I attended an international potluck organized by the student community. Trying new foods and sharing stories with fellow students helped me see Canada as a place of opportunity and adventure, rather than just a daunting new world. Embracing every moment, even the tough ones, made my journey richer and more rewarding.

2. Engage Actively

During my first semester, I found myself slipping into a routine of just attending classes and going home. It wasn’t until I attended a campus event—an open mic night hosted by the student union—that I realized how much I was missing out. I decided to get involved in the campus community, joining clubs and attending more social events. This active engagement not only helped me make new friends but also provided opportunities for personal growth. By participating in these activities, I developed valuable connections and found a sense of belonging that greatly enhanced my overall experience at York.

3. Seek Support

Adjusting to life in a new country can be tough, and I faced my share of challenges. There was a time when I was struggling with academic pressure and feeling homesick. It was during this period that I reached out to the university’s support services. I met with a counselor who helped me navigate my emotions and offered practical advice for managing my stress. Additionally, joining a study group provided academic support and camaraderie. Seeking help when needed proved invaluable, and it made the transition smoother.

4. Stay Open-Minded

One of my initial struggles was adapting to the different teaching styles at York. I remember my first digital marketing class with Professor Leigh, where the teaching approach was much more interactive than I was used to. Initially, I found it challenging, but I chose to stay open-minded. Embracing this new method not only improved my understanding of the subject but also enriched my learning experience. This flexibility extended beyond academics, helping me appreciate diverse cultural perspectives and ultimately making my time at York more enjoyable and fulfilling.

These tips come from my personal experiences at York School of Continuing Studies. Embracing challenges, engaging with the community, seeking support, and staying open-minded are key to making the most of your study abroad journey.

In Conclusion

While my journey at York School of Continuing Studies has had its ups and downs, it’s been a valuable learning experience. From the warmth of newfound friendships to the challenges of navigating a new educational system, every moment has contributed to my growth. One more thing—The Weeknd said, "This city is cold and empty, no one is around to judge me." I think it's not that bad because it's always the people, not the place, that make the difference. For future students, remember to stay positive, embrace the journey, and make the most of every opportunity.
