The Ultimate guide for an International student in Canada
Introduction:

Studying in a new country is life-changing because of its excitement, challenges and
enlightening experiences. I am Deep Bhanushali, aged 27 years, working as a creative
professional and have spent the last year and a half living in Canada as an international
student. In this post, I will describe my experience, which mirrors what Krishna told Arjuna
about his path in Mahabharata and will give advice to other students planning to take up
such courses.
Embracing the Challenge: The First Few Months]
The Initial Struggle:
Having been “the lone wolf” of my family back home, being alone in Canada was no
different. However, residing by myself in Canada presented me with unique challenges.
There was a cultural shock, homesickness and starting over anew with an entirely different
education system. Like Arjuna who faced multiple dilemmas or uncertainties, so did l keep
on doubting at times about the choices that l made for myself?
Discovering My Direction:
Like Lord Krishna did with Arjuna, I found direction in my life through mentors and friends.
In my life, Canada has played a major role in helping me get rediscovered. The faculty at my
institution was incredibly supportive, both academically and emotionally. They helped me
find myself and set my course.
Academic Growth: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Adapting to a New Learning Environment:
The Canadian education system emphasizes critical thinking, practical knowledge and
continuous assessment, which was a radical departure from my prior educational
experiences. At first, I had problems adjusting to this new way of learning. However, with
time and effort, I began to appreciate the depth and breadth of knowledge it offered. The
classroom discussions, group projects and hands-on learning experiences were eye-openers as they revealed the practical applications of theoretical knowledge for me.
Overcoming Difficulties:
I found it challenging to manage time. It felt difficult to strike a balance between my
studies, part-time work and personal life. This taught me the value of time management
and prioritization skills that were vital for my success academically and professionally.
On some occasions, I thought the amount of work I had was too much, but I overcame it through
determination like Arjuna did.
Personal Growth: Developing Resilience
Coping with Loneliness:
Being away from family and friends turned out to be one of the most difficult aspects of my
journey. Sometimes loneliness became so unbearable during those endless nights.
Nevertheless, these moments allowed me to address some deep-seated fears within
myself. At least sharing my heart’s outpourings with someone made me realize that there
were things which hurt me most in life; thus, Canada had become a place where I first shed
tears for such reasons. It was a cathartic experience that marked the beginning of an
emotional healing process for me. By embracing vulnerability, I learned how to
communicate when in need of support. Click on a link to know more about coping-with-loneliness.
I got close to fellow students who were going through similar experiences, and they
became my second family while at school. We managed together as we always encouraged
each other all along this path.
Learn Independence:
Living alone abroad made me independent in a million ways that I had never thought of.
From managing finances to handling household chores, I became self-sufficient. This
quality of mine boosted my self-confidence and prepared me for the next stage of life
challenges. Every small accomplishment, like cooking a meal or successfully navigating
through the public transport system meant so much to me. In my eyes, I was a warrior who
fought battles every day and grew stronger by each passing second.
The Warrior’s Mindset:

There were numerous ways in which Canada resembled Arjuna’s battlefield for warriors. I
confronted my own fears, learned from my mistakes, and eventually emerged victorious.
The obstacles that came my way tested what level of endurance and determination I could
have, thus making me become a better person. Like Arjuna, I realised that the real battle
was inside myself – weeding out doubt in oneself; overcoming fear; shaking off insecurity.
This realization empowered me to take on the role of a warrior within myself with renewed
zeal and greater strength. Click on link to know more about "The warrior mentality of Arjuna".
Advice for Future International Students
Studying abroad is an exceptional opportunity for personal as well as academic growth.
Embrace everything about it including the hardships associated with it. Know this – all
barriers are teachers or learning points as someone would call them. Each experience
whether good or bad adds up to your growth, thus moulding your path.
Never Waver from Seeking Assistance:
Do not ever be reluctant to seek assistance. Professors can guide you academically while
your friends and counselors can provide emotional support. Take advantage of the
resources available at your school. This is no sign of weakness but rather a growth and
development opportunity.
Create a Network of Support:
Building a network of support is essential. Interact with other international students,
participate in clubs and societies, and engage in community activities. Engaging these
associations will offer emotional backing as well as make your experience more fun. These
friendships will give you strength during hard times.
Time Management:
Balancing academics, job, and personal life is all about time management. You can use
planners and apps to help you keep track of your assignments and deadlines. Rank what
needs to be done first so that nothing slips through the cracks or falls behind schedule.
Effective time management leads to less stress and increased productivity.
Be Optimistic and Persevere:

There will always come moments when you feel overcome with anxiety about home
sickness; however, try to be positive minded throughout such periods by reminding yourself
why you took this path in the first place. Persistency coupled with positive thinking helps
one overcome some difficult situations. Celebrate all achievements no matter how small
they may seem pushing on till the final stage remains critical.
My thoughts in the end
To me, my life as an international student in Canada has never been the same. I have
gained a lot of knowledge from it about being strong in the face of difficulties and relying on
other people around you to help you out. In case one is going to be an overseas learner, he
or she should take note that it may not be easy, but the reward is worth it. As long as one is
open-minded and possesses a constructive approach to any given situation, they are
assured of great success in their life.

According to Lord Krishna’s words to Arjuna, “You have the right to work, but never to the
fruit of work.” Concentrate on your efforts and learning, for results will come automatically.
The journey for you as a foreign student will show your bravery spirit perseverance that
does not move no matter what happens.
