Have you ever faced a decision that felt like standing at a crossroads, with each path leading to a completely different future?
Yeah, me too! Choosing to study at York University School of Continuing Studies was one of the biggest decisions of my life. As an international student torn between studying in the UK or Canada, I felt like I was standing at a crossroads much like in Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken." After much thought, I decided to set out on a journey to Canada, specifically to York University SCS, and I haven’t looked back since.
When I was deciding where to study, I had a clear set of criteria: I wanted a short, intensive course that would top up my existing skills in design and copywriting while giving me a solid foundation in marketing. York University SCS ticked all the boxes. Plus, it’s in Toronto—a city full of opportunities and excitement. One thing from the target audience research in marketing that I applied to my university search was that- the narrower your criteria, the more likely you are going to find the exact thing for yourself. But my journey here has been so much more than just academics; it has been a blend of personal discoveries, memorable experiences, and a few unexpected challenges (Stay on course because you will also find out about mistakes that I did and you don’t want to do.)
In this blog, I’ll share the untold truths about studying at York University- insights that no one will tell you, but ones that I learned through my own experiences. From navigating the initial culture shock to making the most of the opportunities available, you are about to find out what to expect from these 8 months of your life at YorkU!
Reality Check! So Did My Expectations Meet the Reality?
The very first realization upon arriving in Canada, and at York University was that my initial expectations were about to be challenged in ways I hadn’t anticipated. For instance, I had grand visions of joining various societies and clubs, participating in student elections, and possibly even becoming a sabbatical officer. However, I quickly learned that the York School of Continuing Studies, while part of the larger York Keele Campus, is somewhat isolated from the main campus activities. There are no clubs or societies at the Continuing Studies school, and this was a bit of a letdown.
Other than that there were also some consistent bumps in the road, like the frequent WiFi issues, no air conditioning in the classrooms during the summer, and being stuck in the same room for all our classes throughout the course- NGL, it was pretty boring.
Despite this initial disappointment, my time at York has been filled with memorable experiences. Attending classes during a snowstorm, for example, was both challenging and exhilarating. It was a test of my commitment and resilience, and I celebrated each small victory along the way. The breakroom (You CANNOT miss that!) at York’s main campus became a sanctuary where I could relax with classmates, and form lasting friendships. And then there was the adrenaline rush of submitting assignments just before the midnight deadline- and that pretty much was a mix of both, relief and accomplishment that I will never forget.
How Did Lecture Halls Give Life Lessons?
My professional growth at York has been substantial. The knowledge and insights I’ve gained, particularly about the Canadian market, have been invaluable. This international exposure has given me an edge in the competition.
Networking opportunities with industry leaders and marketers, discussed by professors, has also been a significant part of my growth. The blend of practical and theoretical knowledge provided by few of the best professors at York (I mean it!) has equipped me with the skills needed to excel in the field of marketing.
Additionally, the guest lectures and workshops offered by York have been incredibly enriching. Learning directly from professionals who are currently working in the industry has provided me with practical insights and up-to-date knowledge that textbooks alone can’t offer. These sessions have been instrumental in understanding the latest trends and best practices in marketing.
But besides the professional growth, there was a lot I discovered about myself and that’s when I got my second realization- there was huge room for improvement. So on a personal level, my time at York has enhanced my self-confidence and discipline. The presentations that are part of our assignments have greatly improved my public speaking skills, making me more comfortable and confident in front of an audience. These personal growth experiences are and ideally should be as valuable as the professional ones.
Living in Toronto has also been a significant part of my personal growth. Adapting to a new country, culture, and climate has taught me resilience and flexibility. From managing my finances to building a new social network, I’ve learned to navigate the challenges of living abroad and living alone. These experiences have made me more independent and self-reliant.
5 Mistakes At York That I Learned The Hard Way (Skip Breathing, But Don’t Skip Number 5)
As an international student at York School of Continuing Studies, I learned valuable lessons along the way, and most of them were learned the hard way. Here are some common mistakes I did and tips on how to avoid them:
- Not Completing Projects Before Time: One of my biggest mistakes
was not starting my projects early enough. Had I begun them in a timely manner, I could have had the opportunity to get them pre-checked by my professors (Oxymoronically speaking, you don’t know how rare that kind of independent handholding is.) This would have allowed me to incorporate their feedback and score much higher grades in my assignments. Take notes! Time management is crucial- start your projects early, seek feedback, and incorporate it.
- Not Pouncing on All Opportunities: While I did take advantage of many opportunities, I missed out on some that could have been game-changers. For instance, some professors offered students the chance to teach the class on a topic of their choice. It was too late when I had my third realization- Such opportunity really could have been a great way for me to gain experience and potentially secure an on-campus job as a teaching assistant. So, when opportunities present themselves, act quick and grab them without hesitation. You never know which bullseye you might hit.
- Missing Out on Events: Unfortunately, the continuing studies school doesn’t host many events. However, this shouldn’t stop you from attending events at the main campus. These events are fantastic opportunities to network and expand your circle within York and outside of York. Make it a point to participate in as many events as possible.
- Neglecting LinkedIn Reviews From Professors: Your LinkedIn profile is a powerful tool for networking and job hunting, especially when you’re in a foreign land. I found it immensely beneficial to have my LinkedIn profile reviewed by professors. Their insights and feedback helped me improve my profile significantly. I cannot emphasize more but don’t hesitate to ask each of your professors for a detailed review, and a re-review after you incorporate their suggestions to enhance your online presence.
- Not Making Yourself Known to Professors: I will tell you why this was a ‘DO NOT SKIP THIS’ point.
It’s essential that every professor knows who you are- specifically, in a good way. Attend classes regularly, participate actively, and volunteer whenever possible. The more your professors know you, the more likely they are to recommend you for opportunities (also, more likely to give good grades.) Building a positive rapport with your professors can open many doors. Don’t believe me, believe those who got jobs through their professors.
