York SCS Yearbook : Reflections & Tips For Incoming Students

Are you considering York SCS for enrolling in a program you are interested in? Here is my experience and a piece of advice before you proceed.
Hey! My name is Muskan Agarwal and I am yet another international student studying at the York School of Continuing Studies (SCS). Studying here has been a life changing experience for me which fostered both professional and personal growth. As an immigrant from India, my journey began long before I arrived in Canada which involved extensive research and careful planning since just like any other international student I had to pack my life in two suitcases and move to a completely new country to figure out life.

My Journey at York SCS
Choosing York SCS was a strategic decision based on various factors, like the school offers lesser than competitive fees, making it an affordable option compared to other institutions in Toronto. Despite the lower cost, York SCS is highly reputed and offers only relevant programs required in the industry. I enrolled in the Post Graduate Certificate in Digital and Content Marketing, which began in January, right in the middle of the harsh Canadian winter and is gonna end soon in mid August. The journey at SCS was so seamless that time flew just in a moment. Although, the bts of school were equally fragmented because dealing with a new life in a new country wasn’t a smooth ride in the beginning. But I am grateful for the people and community who made it easier to survive here in Canada with their support and presence. Also to mention that I am planning to get enrolled for yet another program from York SCS in the coming January intake.
First Impressions
My initial interaction with York SCS was incredibly positive. The help desk staff were supportive enough to provide me with a rough idea of a day at the campus even before the official orientation, when I visited the premises for submitting my transcripts. This early interaction made me feel belonged and helped in my transition into a new environment. During the orientation I met some fellow international students and networked with them. At that time I didn't know that few of them would be my classmates who are now my friends. Throughout the event we were made aware about the flow of our program, ethical and unethical practices in regards to the submission of assignments, tour of the campus and we were even introduced to the faculty. All in all it was an amazing experience connecting with fellow students and faculty prior to meeting them in class.
Essential Skills
The academic experience at York SCS was extremely thorough and rewarding, that helped me gain skills that I couldn't have had built anyother way. In my opinion the program may not be flexible enough in terms of choosing a preferred schedule for the classes, but it taught me essential skills such as time management and prioritisation which made balancing classes, assignments, part-time work, and personal responsibilities easier. Other essential skills that I gained from this journey are being expressive, taking initiative and building connections. Since I was an introvert and I used to hesitate to even express my thoughts and opinions in class during the discussion, I am now confident enough to do it all because of the several opportunities to present group work and projects in front of class in every course and semester.

Academic and Personal Growth
The diversity of the faculty from various professional backgrounds and cultures, uplifted my learning experience which led me to understand different perspectives that couldn’t be taught in any other classroom. Group projects, individual assignments, group presentations, In class activities and certifications were integral parts of the program. The insightful real world experiences shared and discussed in class by the professors helped me understand the application of theoretical knowledge in the real world scenarios.
Support from the Faculty
The faculty at York SCS are immensely insightful. They are not only educators but also active professionals in their respective fields, bringing real-world insights and experiences into the classroom. Their willingness to assist with job applications and resume building is particularly beneficial, providing a deeper understanding of the Canadian job market and work culture.
Personal Development
During my time at York SCS, I overcame shyness and worked on my ability to express myself confidently. I developed strong multitasking skills, learned to manage my time, and became more self-reliant. I also forged meaningful friendships and found a supportive and like minded community among my classmates.

The in-class activities were interactive and fun, fostering a collaborative learning environment that was both engaging and educational.
Advice for Future Students
Navigating academic journeys at York School of Continuing Studies requires a strategic approach to balance studies and personal life. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your experience.
Trust the process
Navigating life to a whole new environment and culture can be overwhelming with thousands of thoughts regarding if it was a right decision and choice. But taking baby steps, doing and understanding one thing at a time will help you trust the process better. Expecting to learn and to be taught your way will be delusional, but coordinating problems to get to a solution with the help of faculty can make the journey easier for everyone.
Time Management
Managing studies with other responsibilities can be challenging. It's common to feel overwhelmed, but making a doable and realistic schedule and actually following it can make a world of difference. Learn the skill of prioritising tasks, this way you’ll have a clear plan and won’t find yourself scrambling at the last minute to meet deadlines.
Avoid distraction
While part-time jobs are a common necessity for many students, it's crucial not to let earning money interfere with your academic responsibilities. Striking a balance between work and study is essential to ensure you don't miss out on valuable class time and learning opportunities. Firstly, prioritise your education. Remember that your primary goal at York SCS is to gain knowledge and skills that will benefit you in the long run. Missing classes or neglecting assignments for short-term financial gains can be detrimental to your overall academic performance and future career prospects.
Don’t let AI overpower your capabilities
AI can significantly enhance our productivity and efficiency. However, it's important not to let AI overshadow our creative thinking for completing assignments. We need to view AI as a supplement to our skills, not a replacement to our critical thinking, creativity, and unique perspective.
Engage Actively and build connections.
Active participation in class discussions, In class activities, group presentations, and assignments is crucial. Engaging actively can enhance your learning experience and help you build a strong professional network not just with the fellow students who might be your future colleagues but with the professors as well since they are working in the same industry that you are pursuing.
Building connections with peers and faculty who are industry professionals as well can open doors to new opportunities. These connections can provide valuable insights and support as you navigate your career path.
Maintain a Balanced Lifestyle
While academics are important, it’s also crucial to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Make time for socialising, exploring, working out, eating well and taking care of yourself and your mental health. Taking care of your mental and physical well-being will enhance your overall experience and lifestyle.
In conclusion, studying at the York School of Continuing Studies has been a wholesome journey, helping me grow both professionally and personally. Moving to Canada from India was a big step, filled with careful planning and adjustment, but the experience has been incredible.
To future students, my advice is simple: trust the process and be patient with yourself. Time management, balancing personal and student life is the key for making things doable. While it's important to work part-time, don't let it distract you from your main goal of learning. Use AI as a tool, but remember that your creativity and critical thinking are irreplaceable. Get involved in class, build connections with peers and professors, and make the most of every opportunity.
Finally, don't forget to take care of yourself. Balance your studies with social activities, exercise, and good nutrition. Your well-being is just as important as your academics. Embrace your time at York SCS, It has the potential to transform your life in wonderful ways.
